A Wear OS system status bar has debuted in Google's canary emulator, previewing in-app indicators that are planned for a future update after Wear OS 7.1.

Google has released a new canary version of its Wear OS emulator that introduces a Wear OS system status bar inside applications. Smartwatch owners will not see this feature right away, because Google confirmed it will not ship with the stable release of Wear OS 7.1. Google provides developers with this early preview to prepare apps for a future platform release.
The updated emulator package runs previously unannounced Wear OS 7.1 software based on Android 17, as reported by 9to5Google. Google has steadily adapted Android phone conventions for wearables over several release cycles, including Material 3 Expressive interface styling. Adding a persistent status layer inside third-party applications mirrors the standard mobile experience, giving smartwatches a consistent header.

In documentation accompanying the release, Google described how the status overlay functions across round screens:
To prepare for an upcoming platform release of Wear OS, this canary emulator renders a persistent system status bar over Wear OS app windows at the top position of the circular display. The system status bar displays the current time and system status indicators. These indicators use standardized clock typography, placement, and backplate across the platform and different apps, including your app.
The clock display appears after two seconds of user inactivity while navigating an app. Full-screen dialogs, such as date and time pickers, alerts, or general dialog windows, automatically hide the status bar to keep the screen uncluttered. This early build displays a single star icon as a placeholder while Google finalizes the remaining system status indicators.
Google stated that the status bar remains excluded from the initial production release:
The system status bar is included exclusively in this canary emulator to support early testing and feedback. It won’t be included in the upcoming Wear OS 7.1 stable emulator.
When Google eventually deploys the status bar in a future Wear OS platform release, users will gain faster access to glanceable device information. Checking connection states or current battery levels will no longer require returning to the watch face or opening the quick settings panel from the top of the display.
