Samsung is reportedly considering its Exynos 2700 chipset for the Galaxy S27 Ultra because Qualcomm's upcoming Snapdragon processor faces overheating and throttling in tests. Qualcomm reportedly has until mid-October to resolve the issue before Samsung finalizes component orders for mass production.

Thermal throttling on Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 processor has prompted Samsung to consider using an Exynos chip in the Galaxy S27 Ultra. According to South Korea’s Seoul Economic Daily, excessive heat generated by Qualcomm’s silicon causes throttling during internal testing. If Samsung decides to switch, it would likely adopt the Exynos 2700. That choice would mark the company’s first top-tier Galaxy Ultra model without a Snapdragon processor since the Galaxy S22 Ultra.

Engineers from both companies are currently working to fix the overheating behavior before mass production begins. Samsung’s internal evaluation schedule gave Qualcomm a reported deadline of mid-October to resolve the issue. Samsung set that cutoff because it must finalize component suppliers before factory production starts ahead of year’s end. While Samsung originally planned to use Qualcomm’s flagship silicon for the premium Ultra, testers found that the Snapdragon chip has struggled to deliver stable performance. Still, time remains for Qualcomm to address the thermal defects before hardware selections lock in.
Other models in the upcoming series, including the Galaxy S27, S27+, and S27 Pro, are already slated to ship with the Exynos 2700. Leaked benchmark data indicates the Exynos 2700 competes strongly against Qualcomm’s premier processors. The leaked performance figures show Samsung’s chip ahead in multicore testing, alongside better power efficiency across CPU, GPU, and AI tasks.
