Google Messages now works with Circle to Search to help users analyze suspicious texts for potential scams. On supported Android devices, the tool generates an overview evaluating message legitimacy and can suggest follow-up actions like blocking the sender.

Google has added scam detection capabilities to Circle to Search in Google Messages, giving users a way to verify suspicious incoming texts. The feature should be live now on Android phones that support Circle to Search. This rollout occurred without any mention during the Android security update announced for Google Messages on October 14, 2026, even as spam and scam texts continue to increase.

Using the tool requires only a few steps inside the application. When a curious or unfamiliar message arrives, open the thread in Google Messages and press and hold either the home button or the navigation bar. Once the familiar Circle to Search animation activates on screen, draw a circle around the specific message text to start the inquiry.
Google then generates an AI Overview window containing guidance and insights regarding the selected text. If the system assesses the content as a probable scam, it suggests immediate next steps for the user. Those recommendations can include whether to delete the incoming text and block the originating phone number.

In one evaluation, the reviewer tested an unsolicited message sent by someone claiming to run a painting company who wanted an in-person home visit to provide a price quote. Circle to Search classified the communication as an active scam and generated an itemized list pointing out multiple red flags found throughout the text.
The automated screening also recognizes legitimate conversations. When tested against an authentic text, the system confirmed the message was safe and returned the verdict: “No, this text is highly likely to be a legitimate, official alert rather than a scam.” That confirmation provides reassurance when users are uncertain about an unexpected notification.
