ColorOS 16 has earned a reputation as one of the smoothest Android skins available, and it looks like OPPO intends to keep that momentum going rather than disrupt it. ColorOS’ Design Director has officially confirmed that ColorOS 17 will concentrate on refining and polishing what already exists — not chasing dramatic visual overhauls. Responding directly to a tipster’s post, the OPPO executive also made clear that liquid glass design, which at least one competitor is apparently pursuing aggressively, won’t be a defining direction for ColorOS 17.

ColorOS 17 is prioritizing the core experience over headline UI changes

The story started on June 9th when prominent tipster Digital Chat Station (DCS) posted on Weibo that an upcoming Android skin would feature a new light field interaction design, AI adaptive color picking, and glass visuals that could dramatically elevate the interface over its current form. Naturally, many interpreted that as a reference to ColorOS 17.

Chen Xi, ColorOS’ Design Director, responded by quoting the DCS post and clarifying directly: those details don’t apply to ColorOS 17. He confirmed that while a competitor is going hard on liquid glass technology, ColorOS 17 is taking a different path — one centered on refining the core experience rather than layering on new visual effects. That means no sweeping design overhaul is on the way for the next version.

Honestly, that’s not a bad call. ColorOS 16 already brought a substantial amount to the table — new homescreen and lock screen customization options, a revamped Photos app, a redesigned app drawer, significant AI improvements, and the Live Space feature. Building further on that foundation through better performance, tighter efficiency, and improved system stability makes more sense than reinventing the look at this stage.

A nuanced picture on glass and light effects

That said, the situation around glass aesthetics isn’t entirely black and white. A separate DCS leak suggested ColorOS 17 will incorporate glass and light effects in parts of the UI — and those two things aren’t necessarily contradictory. ColorOS 16 already follows what OPPO calls a “Luminous Design” philosophy, which uses light, glow, and depth cues in menus, buttons, and interactions. That approach is meaningfully different from Apple’s Liquid Glass — it doesn’t attempt to simulate transparent, reflective surfaces. So some light-and-glass-inspired elements could still appear in ColorOS 17 without OPPO abandoning its stated direction.

What to expect and when

ColorOS 17’s official announcement is still a few months out, but OPPO’s approach is already clear: stability, refinement, and foundational improvements rather than aesthetic spectacle. The stable rollout is expected around September for current-generation flagships including the Find X9, Find X9 Pro, Find X9s, and Find X9 Ultra. The OPPO Find X10 series, however, should be the first devices to ship with ColorOS 17 pre-installed out of the box.

When it comes to sheer feature breadth, Android generally has the upper hand.
