Google Pixel Watch 5 launches with bigger batteries and Gemini Intelligence

Google Pixel Watch 5 has officially launched with larger batteries, twice the storage of its predecessor, an accelerated Snapdragon processor, and a broad set of health, fitness, sleep, and Gemini features. Preorders opened on August 12, 2026, with prices starting at $399 and general availability scheduled for August 20.

According to Android Authority, Google revealed the smartwatch ahead of its Pixel launch event, where the wearable was set to appear alongside the Pixel 11 series. The new generation retains the familiar rounded design and two standard case sizes, but adds a Stephen Curry Special Edition, new wellness tools, generative watch faces, and upgraded route tracking.

The Pixel Watch 5 continues the slightly flatter dome introduced with the Pixel Watch 4. Google describes the design as a return to the familiar fundamentals customers appreciate rather than a major visual departure.

Standard models are available in 41mm and 45mm sizes. Both use a 100% recycled aluminum case and include a second-generation Active Band made from Hydrogenated Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (HNBR) with a soft-touch coating.

The 45mm model weighs 36.7 g without the band and is also 12.3 mm tall. Its three standard combinations are:

Google is also producing a US-only Stephen Curry Special Edition in collaboration with the NBA star. It comes exclusively as a 45mm LTE model with a Satin Pyrite aluminum case and Rye Performance Loop Band. That band uses recycled polyester yarn with a waterproof coating, stainless steel lugs, and a raised interior print intended to increase airflow.

Fit ranges vary by size. The 41mm Active Band covers wrists measuring 130–175 mm with the small strap and 165–210 mm with the large one. For the 45mm model, those ranges are 150–185 mm and 165–215 mm. The Stephen Curry band accommodates wrists measuring 140–215 mm.

An Active Band comes in the box, but Google will also offer Active Sport, Woven, Gradient Stretch, Metal Mesh, Metal Links, Metal Slim, and Performance Loop options.

Bigger batteries and 64GB storage lead the hardware changes

Both sizes use an Actua 360 display with a 320 ppi AMOLED LTPO panel, DCI-P3 color, custom 3D Corning Gorilla Glass 5, and a responsive 1–60 Hz refresh rate. Peak brightness reaches 3,000 nits, while the always-on display can fall to 1 nit. The watches retain an IP68 rating, 5 ATM water resistance, NFC, GPS, a built-in microphone, and a built-in speaker.

The 41mm battery increases from 325mAh to 332mAh. Google rates it for up to 30 hours with the always-on display or 48 hours in Battery Saver mode. Using the included Quick Charge Dock, it takes about 15 minutes to reach 50%, 25 minutes for 80%, and 45 minutes for a full charge.

The 45mm battery moves from 455mAh to 465mAh. Its quoted endurance rises to 40 hours with the always-on display and 72 hours with Battery Saver. Charging takes about 15 minutes to reach 50%, 30 minutes for 80%, and 60 minutes for 100%.

Google replaces the previous Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 with the Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Accelerated and a Cortex-M55 co-processor. The new version is said to be 12% faster than the earlier SoC. Storage doubles to 64GB of eMMC flash, and Bluetooth moves from version 5.3 to Bluetooth 6.0. Wear OS 7.0 ships on both sizes.

The sensor package includes a compass, altimeter, barometer, magnetometer, 3-axis accelerometer, gyroscope, ambient light sensor, and a far-field skin-temperature sensor. Red and infrared sensors handle SpO2 monitoring, while multipurpose electrical sensors work with the ECG app. Google also includes a multi-path optical heart-rate sensor and an electrical sensor for measuring skin conductance through cEDA body-response tracking.

Controls consist of touchless one-handed gestures, a side button, a haptic crown, and third-generation premium haptics.

Dual-frequency GPS support differs slightly by market. US configurations support GPS, Galileo, and Glonass, while rest-of-world models add Beidou and QZSS. Connectivity includes 4G LTE and UMTS, Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax on 2.4GHz and 5GHz, NFC, Ultra-Wideband, and Satellite SOS communication. The Japan-only configuration includes FeliCa.

Pixel Watch 5 requires Android 12 or newer. The box contains the watch, small and large Active Band pieces, the Google Pixel Watch Quick Charge Dock, and a Quick Start Guide.

Warranty coverage lasts one year in the US, Canada, Japan, India, Singapore, Taiwan, Malaysia, and Mexico. Buyers in the UK, EEA, France, Switzerland, and Australia receive two years.

New health tools estimate patterns without new sensors

Pixel Watch 5 retains the features introduced with Pixel Watch 4 while adding several wellness capabilities. Blood pressure patterns use the existing sensors and machine learning to identify trends that could place strain on the heart.

Insulin resistance metrics follow a similar approach. No new sensor directly measures insulin. Instead, an algorithm examines 30 days of information collected by the watch and produces an estimate of insulin levels and how insulin resistance changes over the month. The source compares the method to a doctor drawing an informed conclusion from symptoms when a direct test is unavailable.

Breathing Emergency Detection is another addition that Google describes as “first-of-its-kind.” When enabled, it can prompt an emergency call if the wearer becomes unresponsive and the watch detects a decline in oxygen levels.

Availability for this safety feature remains limited by regulatory approval. It is expected to reach the EU after approval, while Google says it has not received FDA clearance for use in the US.

Sleep Breathing Quality also uses oxygen information, analyzing minute-by-minute variations in blood oxygen during sleep. The resulting daily and monthly breathing patterns are meant to show how breathing may relate to energy, recovery, and heart health.

Google is also adding bedtime animations and a dedicated bedtime-mode watch face. The company claims its updated sleep tracking is 15% more accurate than before.

Bedtime Automations handles part of the wind-down process automatically. Once the watch detects that the user has fallen asleep, it can pause music, podcasts, or audiobooks and silence notifications.

Fitness upgrades include real-time guidance and improved GPS

Real-time workout information is scheduled to arrive in September. Users will be able to construct a workout through the Google Health app, sync it to Pixel Watch 5, and view progress information on the watch as the session unfolds.

Exercise filters make it easier to narrow the available options while building a routine. Workouts can be filtered by equipment type, muscle group, and complexity before being sent to the wearable.

Readiness Score is intended to help users decide whether to increase their effort or focus on recovery. It works with more than 50 tracked exercises, including running, swimming, biking, pickleball, basketball, and strength training. During a workout, the watch provides audio and visual cues for every set and rest period.

Google claims Pixel Watch 5 delivers the most accurate route tracking of any Pixel Watch so far. The company says it can outperform Apple Watch Ultra 3 and Garmin Fenix 8 Pro while offering twice the route-tracking accuracy of earlier Pixel generations.

To produce the final workout map, the system combines Android Location technology with 3D building models, a network of GNSS reference stations, atmospheric corrections, and corrections for signals reflected by buildings. These performance comparisons are Google’s claims rather than independent test results.

Gemini Intelligence extends Google’s agentic actions from phones to the smartwatch. These actions are designed to automate complicated tasks spanning apps and the web. Google says Pixel Watch 5 was built for Gemini Intelligence, allowing it to surface information relevant to a text or present timely updates such as flight details.

Two conventional watch faces, Weave and Chronograph, join the selection. Generative AI can also create a custom watch face, while 11 new glanceable complication styles provide additional layout options.

Pixel Watch 5 is available to preorder through the Google Store, Best Buy, and Amazon. The 41mm Wi-Fi model costs $399, while the 45mm Wi-Fi version is priced at $429.

The US-only Stephen Curry Special Edition costs $579. It is offered solely in the 45mm size with LTE connectivity, the Satin Pyrite case, and Rye Performance Loop Band.
