Google Pixel HiLight is the official name of the ambient LED system built around the camera flash on Google’s new Pro phones. Previously known through leaks as Pixel Glow, the feature can show favorite-contact calls and Gemini activity while the phone remains face down. It is exclusive to the Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL, and Pixel 11 Pro Fold.

Google confirmed the name alongside the Pixel 11 flagship lineup after months of leaks. Android Authority writer Adamya Sharma, who preferred the earlier Pixel Glow name, reported that the small LED array provides information without requiring owners to turn over or unlock their phones.

Google says HiLight addresses the tension between staying connected and avoiding constant notification distractions. The idea is to present information that can be understood with a glance at the back of the device.

The approach is familiar. Nothing has made customizable LED notifications a recognizable part of its phones through the Glyph interface. Google is adapting a similar concept for the Pixel 11 Pro series, beginning with two specific uses.

Custom colors identify calls from favorite contacts

When a compatible Pixel is placed face down, HiLight’s LEDs can glow gently to signal that something deserves attention. The first launch feature focuses on incoming calls from people marked as favorite contacts.

HiLight works alongside Flip to Shhh, the Google feature that silences incoming calls when the phone is put face down. Rather than leaving no visible indication of a priority call, HiLight can display a custom color assigned to a favorite contact.

The alert is not limited to one service. Phone by Google and WhatsApp both support HiLight, allowing the same contact-specific color to appear regardless of which app the person uses to call.

This gives the rear LEDs a more selective purpose than flashing for every notification. Users can keep the phone face down and quiet while retaining a visual cue when a chosen person tries to reach them.

HiLight displays Gemini’s current status

Gemini provides the second main use available at launch. During hands-free interactions, the LEDs can pulse as Gemini moves between listening, thinking, and responding.

These signals let users follow the assistant’s status without watching the display. Google describes the experience as a way to “stay informed without looking at your screen.”

Together, the two functions make HiLight more than a decorative ring around the flash. Both focus on information that may remain useful while the phone is lying screen-down.

More alerts are planned, but access remains limited

Google does not consider HiLight complete. Asked by Android Authority whether the LEDs could support more than calls and Gemini, the company said it plans to expand their capabilities.

Google specifically mentioned message notifications from favorite contacts as a planned addition. This would extend the priority-contact concept from calls to messages, although the source provided no release date.

HiLight could eventually become a broader communication system built into Pixel hardware instead of remaining a basic notification light. One unanswered question is how extensively Google will let developers and other Pixel features use the LEDs.

For now, availability remains restricted to the Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL, and Pixel 11 Pro Fold.
