The Vivo X500 Pro Max arrives as the top model in Vivo’s newest three-tier flagship family, introducing substantial silicon and hardware changes ahead of its upcoming global launch. Instead of relying on modest annual iterations, the company altered the internal specifications and physical dimensions across the line. The standard X500 uses a 6.59-inch panel paired with the Dimensity 9600M processor, while the smaller X500 Pro fits a 6.36-inch display alongside the flagship Dimensity 9600 Pro. Standing above both, the X500 Pro Max combines that top-tier chip with an expanded display and a thoroughly revised camera arrangement.

Early hands-on testing focuses on the global edition. The Chinese domestic variant differs in several hardware choices, including battery capacity and accessory compatibility. A broader international rollout will clarify distribution timelines for the full product family. For now, early hands-on evaluation provides an initial assessment of the device, showing deliberate adjustments to the chassis, processing hardware, optical components, and software.

Design changes and exterior hardware

The gray version examined by the reviewer presents a two-tone rear surface with contrasting visual textures. Across the lower portion of the glass back, a matte coating incorporates tiny reflective specks that shimmer when angled toward direct light. Above this section, the upper portion rises slightly with an altered texture, though the entire glass back remains uniformly smooth beneath the fingers. This approach avoids excessive reflections while giving the rear surface a distinct identity that sets it apart from conventional smooth glass phones.

The rear camera housing remains substantial in size, following modern smartphone manufacturing trends toward prominent camera islands. Vivo added a color-matched outer ring around the perimeter of the circular island, softening the transition against the gray backplate. The flash module also received a minor styling update, moving from the linear slit seen on older hardware to a round circular emitter. Surrounding the backplate, the chassis adopts flat aluminum side rails paired with completely flat front and rear glass panes. The construction carries an IP69 rating for water and dust ingress, providing protection against high-pressure washdowns and heavy rain exposure.

Retail packaging includes essential accessories right in the box: a standard protective case, a USB charging cable, and a 90W power brick. Buyers interested in mobile photography can purchase Vivo’s optional Photographer Kit. That separate accessory bundle contains a shoulder strap, an additional quick-release hook, and an ergonomic case with a built-in camera control grip for stable shooting.

Global purchasers do not receive one accessory available in China: a specialized secondary case designed around a rear preview screen. In the Chinese market, that secondary display case allows photographers to frame selfies using the higher-quality rear cameras instead of the lower-resolution front camera. The international model skips that option entirely. Regarding physical controls, the phone lacks a dedicated camera shutter key, which the tester found acceptable because the customizable shortcut button remains on the frame. Users can program that physical key to open selected applications or trigger specific system actions based on personal preference.

Screen upgrades and display capabilities

The display measures 6.85 inches diagonally, growing from the 6.78-inch panel used on last year’s device. That dimension makes the panel physically larger than the screen on the older X300 Ultra. In addition to the size increase, the panel’s resolution matches that of the X300 Ultra, which provides a notable sharpness upgrade over the direct predecessor. Content looks well defined across the larger surface area, benefiting reading comfort and media playback.

Peak brightness reaches 4,500 nits, matching the high luminance targets of contemporary premium displays. The panel relies on LTPO backplane technology, which adjusts the refresh rate dynamically according to on-screen activity to manage power draw. For high-frame-rate gaming and fast UI navigation, the refresh rate climbs up to 144Hz. This maximum rate yields fluid interface animations and responsive touch feedback during fast document scrolling and web browsing.

Beyond the core panel characteristics, the front glass integrates an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner for biometric security, which reads ridges quickly even when fingers are damp. Vivo configured the always-on display software so users can keep ambient clock and notification information visible permanently instead of turning off when idle. Physical connectivity centers on a USB 3.2 port at the base for high-speed file transfers, complemented by dual stereo speakers for audio output and a four-microphone array positioned around the chassis for voice capture and noise reduction.

The 2nm Dimensity chipset and software performance

Processing duties rely on MediaTek’s Dimensity 9600 Pro, making this the first commercial smartphone using a processor fabricated on a 2nm semiconductor node. The transition to a 2nm manufacturing process marks a notable technical shift in mobile semiconductor fabrication. The architecture implements ARM’s latest CPU microarchitectures arranged in an eight-core cluster. Two ultra-prime cores operate at clock frequencies up to 4.55GHz, handling heavy single-thread computational spikes. Three performance cores run at 4.35GHz for demanding multi-threaded workloads, while three additional efficiency cores clocked at 3.1GHz manage background processing and lighter applications.

On the graphics side, the integrated ARM GPU delivers a claimed 27% increase in peak graphics capability over the previous generation. This compute performance targets high-fidelity 3D gaming, complex multitasking, and on-device machine learning calculations. MediaTek engineered the platform with support for next-generation LPDDR6 memory and UFS 5.0 solid-state storage standards. However, Vivo has not publicly clarified whether the tested production units incorporate those newer components or continue using LPDDR5X memory and UFS 4.1 flash storage. Detailed benchmarking in the reviewer’s upcoming full review will examine memory bandwidth and storage write speeds.

Software operations are powered by OriginOS 7 built on top of Android 17. Following the visual and functional changes introduced in OriginOS 6, this seventh iteration is primarily an operational refinement. The user interface retains its responsive transitions, supplemented by newly incorporated artificial intelligence tools and smoother touch interactions. Vivo also added an updated Snap Up Engine, an internal background service designed to optimize application launch priorities and allocate system memory resources under load.

The tester expressed satisfaction with the familiar visual layout, noting that preserving an established layout avoids unnecessary user friction when an existing interface already operates reliably. Because initial impressions do not expose thermal limits or throttling under sustained load, definitive assessments regarding gaming stability, sustained heat dissipation, and background process management remain pending until longer lab evaluations are completed.

LOFIC main sensor and zoom camera hardware

Vivo X500 pro max

The optical configuration represents one of the most substantial hardware refreshes on the device, updating every sensor except the front-facing selfie camera. Leading the telephoto setup is a 200MP periscope zoom module borrowed directly from the X300 Ultra. Integrating that specific periscope hardware allows the phone to capture long-distance shots with high optical clarity, preventing fine distant textures from breaking down into blurred or watercolor artifacts when users crop in close. While the handset omits several software modes from the Ultra tier, the shared periscope assembly provides a proven optical foundation.

For the primary wide camera, Vivo adopted Sony’s latest 50MP CMOS sensor with a 1/1.28-inch optical format featuring Lateral Overflow Integration Capacitor (LOFIC) technology. Traditional smartphone sensors achieve high dynamic range by capturing successive exposures at varying shutter speeds and blending them into a single frame through computational algorithms. LOFIC technology changes this process by storing excess electrical charge generated in bright image areas directly on the photodiode circuit. This single-exposure hardware approach captures wide dynamic range without requiring multi-frame stitching overhead.

Single-shot capture provides practical benefits for everyday photography. Fast-moving subjects show reduced ghosting and motion blur, avoiding the doubled outlines that frequently occur when combining multiple consecutive exposures. The LOFIC sensor also enables 4K HDR video capture at 60 frames per second with lower system power consumption, preserving highlight and shadow details without producing severe thermal strain on the battery.

Alongside the main sensor and the 200MP periscope zoom, the phone incorporates a 50MP ultrawide shooter. Camera software includes specialized shooting modes such as 4K Cinematic Colour Video, Auto-framing subject tracking, and Stage Mode 3.0 for concert and theatrical venues. Users seeking extreme magnification can purchase optional 200mm and 400mm telephoto extender lenses. Much like the extenders designed for the earlier X300 Ultra, these accessories mount over the existing lenses to provide mechanical telephoto reach, though each extender requires a separate financial investment.

Battery capacity and initial hands-on verdict

Battery capacity presents another noticeable division between regional variants. The Chinese domestic edition houses an 8,000mAh cell, whereas the global review unit contains a 7,800mAh capacity. While slightly smaller than the domestic version, a 7,800mAh battery remains exceptionally generous for a flagship handset, especially when operating alongside a 2nm processor engineered for energy efficiency. Recharging hardware maintains the previous standard, offering 90W wired fast charging with the bundled wall charger and 40W wireless charging for compatible Qi pads.

These physical changes distinguish the handset from typical yearly updates that merely swap processors and apply cosmetic trim. Combining a larger 6.85-inch 144Hz screen, a 2nm Dimensity 9600 Pro platform, a large 7,800mAh battery pack, and a restructured camera system creates a comprehensive overhaul across the primary hardware pillars. The tester observed that Vivo avoided treating the refresh as a routine marketing exercise, delivering tangible improvements across the chassis and processing components.

Photographic capabilities stand out as the central focus of the new hardware package. Equipping the main camera with Sony’s 50MP LOFIC sensor addresses motion artifacts directly while reducing power overhead during 4K 60fps recording. Coupled with the 200MP periscope telephoto lens, the 50MP ultrawide module, and optional 200mm and 400mm extender attachments, the device provides content creators with extensive optical versatility that rivals dedicated imaging equipment.

Nevertheless, paper specifications do not guarantee real-world success on their own. Hands-on testing confirms that the hardware foundation appears strong, yet practical longevity, thermal throttling under sustained processor stress, image processing consistency across varying light, and daily software stability must be verified through thorough lab evaluation. The full review will test whether the global model sustains these initial impressions under intensive daily operation.
