Sony is rolling out Android 17 to the Xperia 10 VIII and Xperia 10 VII with new customization and screen recording tools. The mid-range models miss out on select flagship features such as Quick Share AirDrop support, while Sony canceled the update for the Xperia 10 VI.

Sony has started rolling out the Android 17 update to the Xperia 10 VIII and Xperia 10 VII. The company first began rolling out the operating system upgrade in September, starting with the flagship Xperia 1 VIII. These mid-range phones will not receive all the features that the flagship received.

Android 17 brings several new features to the Xperia 10 VIII and VII. The Wallpaper & style feature introduces refreshed wallpaper and clock designs, and users can customize icons by shape and style. The Quick Settings panel is also further customizable, allowing users to resize and rearrange tiles according to their preferences. In addition, larger tiles can display short descriptions.
The screen recording feature also receives an update. Users can record either the entire screen or just a specific app. The recorder also allows users to record device and microphone audio at the same time, which can assist content creators who want to record their screen along with their own commentary.
The Xperia 10 VIII and VII will miss out on certain new features. These include Quick Share AirDrop support and an upgraded AI Camera Assistant experience, both of which seem exclusive to the Xperia 1 VIII. Sony is also reportedly limiting Android 17’s Desktop mode to the Xperia 1 VIII, 1 VII, and 1 VI.
The Xperia 10 VI will not receive the Android 17 update. Although Sony previously promised the update for the phone, it reversed its decision in October. Sony cites “limitations related to the device’s storage configuration” as the reason for not pushing the update to the device.
