The Sony Xperia 1 VII Android 17 update has begun reaching users, bringing desktop mode and visual customizations to the prior flagship. According to Reddit users cited by GSMArena, European models are receiving the stable firmware release first. The update arrives under build number 71.2.A.2.35 and requires an over-the-air package weighing 1.1GB. This rollout follows Sony’s deployment of stable Android 17 to the Xperia 1 VIII last month, which introduced desktop mode and an updated Quick Settings menu.

Sony’s previously published changelog outlines the features coming to the Xperia 1 VII. The build adds a desktop mode, resizeable Quick Settings tiles, and improved screen recording functionality. Users also receive an updated Wallpaper and Style feature that includes the ability to customize icon shapes across the home screen. However, the older handset does not receive every feature present on the current flagship. The Xperia 1 VII misses out on the AI Camera Assistant introduced with the Xperia 1 VIII, and it does not gain AirDrop support through Quick Share.
This update arrives shortly after Sony announced a reversal regarding its update pledge for the Xperia 10 VI. The company confirmed that it will not bring Android 17 to the phone, attributing the decision to “technical limitations” related to device storage. That announcement broke Sony’s earlier commitment to deliver three major operating system upgrades for the handset, an assurance that would have carried the phone to Android 17.
