Samsung rolled out its upgraded sleep apnea feature to Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Ring after clearances from the US FDA and South Korea. The update reports breathing interruption severity using overnight vitals, and Samsung plans to introduce the capability to more countries over time.

Samsung sleep apnea detection has expanded across the company’s wearable lineup through an upgraded feature for Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Ring. This rollout follows regulatory clearance from the US FDA in July, along with approval from Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS). With these clearances, Samsung becomes the first company to bring sleep apnea risk detection to a smart ring.

The original feature only notified users whether they were at risk. Integrated into the Samsung Health Monitor app, the updated version monitors vitals more closely during sleep and reports how severe breathing interruptions are. Those details can assist during medical consultations, giving users actual data to share with their doctors instead of guesses.
The feature already has an established track record. In February 2024, its first version received FDA De Novo authorization, making it the first wearable tool of its kind to flag possible moderate or severe sleep apnea.
Sleeping with a smartwatch on the wrist does not suit every person. The Galaxy Ring is light and comfortable, making wearers much more likely to keep it on every night. It also delivers results without requiring weeks of data. Tracking sleep across just two nights within any 10 days provides enough data for the tool to generate useful results.
“We are giving people the tools to help spot possible early signs of sleep apnea and take charge of their wellbeing,” said Jongmin Choi, Head of Health R&D Group, Mobile eXperience (MX) Business, Samsung Electronics.
For users who own a Galaxy Watch or Galaxy Ring, enabling the feature lets them track sleep apnea risk with whichever device feels most comfortable to sleep in. Samsung plans to bring the upgraded feature to more countries over time.
