  • It's a familiar refrain in tech: from a few feet away, this year's Pixel Watch looks just like last year's.
  • The Pixel Watch 5 packs 50% more RAM, twice the storage, a faster processor, more accurate GPS tracking, and on-device Gemini Nano, all for just $30 more than the Watch 4.
  • Android Central called it a surprisingly good spec bump that's worth the upgrade for anyone coming from an older Pixel Watch or a different brand entirely.

It’s a familiar refrain in tech: from a few feet away, this year’s Pixel Watch looks just like last year’s. On the surface, the Google Pixel Watch 4 and Pixel Watch 5 look nearly identical, sharing the same domed glass design, the same fast-charging setup, and the latest version of Wear OS.

The Pixel Watch 5 packs 50% more RAM, twice the storage, a faster processor, more accurate GPS tracking, and on-device Gemini Nano, all for just $30 more than the Watch 4. Android Central called it a surprisingly good spec bump that’s worth the upgrade for anyone coming from an older Pixel Watch or a different brand entirely.

That said, shoppers can likely find a Pixel Watch 4 for considerably less, and Android Central noted that could still be a great purchase, especially if the price gap reaches something like $100 below the Pixel Watch 5.

Design, hardware, and specs

Side by side, the two watches are visually indistinguishable. They share the exact same dimensions and weight, the same glass dome, matching water and dust resistance, identical diving specs, and even the same sensor suite, including the same 3,000-nit display.

The Pixel Watch 5’s battery is about 2% larger than the Watch 4’s, which keeps battery life essentially the same even though the Watch 5’s chipset is 20% faster. The Watch 5 also ships with 3GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, compared to 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage on the Watch 4. The 41mm Pixel Watch 5 packs a 332mAh battery rated for 30 hours with always-on display or 48 hours in Battery Saver, while the 45mm model steps up to 465mAh for 40 hours with AOD or 72 hours in Battery Saver. Those numbers are only slightly higher than the Pixel Watch 4’s 325mAh and 455mAh batteries, which offer the same 30/48-hour and 40/72-hour estimates in either size.

That extra 1GB of RAM doesn’t sound like much on paper, but Android Central said it’s what allows Gemini Nano to function properly, while the added storage leaves room for more downloaded music and podcasts for workouts. Both watches also share Google’s haptic engine, the rotating crown, the same glossy exterior, support for the same wristbands, and identical connectivity options.

Software and AI

There’s no meaningful gap between the two watches on features, though Android Central flagged a few things worth noting. Google’s new Health Guardian is supported all the way back to the Pixel Watch 3, so buyers whose main interest is insulin resistance and blood pressure trend tracking could go with an even older, cheaper model. Watch 5 faces can even be sideloaded onto a Pixel Watch 4.

The real difference lies in Gemini capability and software support length. The Pixel Watch 4 is set to receive OS updates through October 2028, while the Watch 5 is supported through October 2029, and Android Central expects that extra year to bring new Gemini-based features given the Watch 5’s larger RAM allotment.

The Watch 5 also runs Gemini Nano on-device, so simple voice commands like starting a timer, controlling workouts or music, and toggling settings are instant, while the Pixel Watch 4 needs an internet connection to handle the same tasks. Android Central noted that gap may not matter most of the time, but it becomes relevant on a run without a phone or LTE connection nearby.

Health and workout tracking

Google announced a wide range of new health features alongside the Pixel Watch 5, and according to Android Central, all of those features are also headed to the Pixel Watch 4, including the new insulin resistance and blood pressure trend tracking.

The one real difference is the Watch 5’s enhanced GPS tracking, which further improves on the already strong dual-band tracking found on the Watch 4. Android Central said that upgrade will come in handy for anyone who relies on Google Maps navigation on their watch, especially in a city, but may not matter much otherwise.

Which should you buy?

At full retail price, Android Central’s verdict favors the Pixel Watch 5: for just $30 more, buyers get double the RAM, a faster processor, proper on-device Gemini capability, and an extra year of software support, which the outlet called a no-brainer.

If a Pixel Watch 4 can be found for at least $100 less, though, that calculus shifts. It’s still a less capable watch, but Android Central noted most people won’t miss the newer features if it means saving significant money, adding that the Watch 4’s software support runs out two years sooner, in October 2028, for anyone weighing that tradeoff.

Apple Watch Series 12 vs Pixel Watch 5: how they compare

Apple Watch Series 12 vs Pixel Watch 5 is ultimately a comparison that comes down mainly to which phone someone already carries, since neither watch works across ecosystems. But for anyone still weighing iOS against Android, there are real differences elsewhere too, spanning GPS accuracy, heart rate sensing, battery life, and each company's onboard AI […]
