Apple Watch Series 12 vs Pixel Watch 5 is ultimately a comparison that comes down mainly to which phone someone already carries, since neither watch works across ecosystems. But for anyone still weighing iOS against Android, there are real differences elsewhere too, spanning GPS accuracy, heart rate sensing, battery life, and each company’s onboard AI assistant.
Price and availability
At the time of writing, the Apple Watch Series 12 is available for pre-order and will launch officially on September 18th, starting at $399/£369 for the 42mm aluminum case. The Google Pixel Watch 5 is available to buy now and shares the same £369 UK starting price, though in the US it’s priced slightly higher at $399.99 versus the Apple Watch’s $399.

Platform lock-in: Android vs iOS
One of the most important differences to keep in mind is platform lock-in: the Pixel Watch 5 is made for Android, while the Apple Watch Series 12 is designed purely for iOS. That means a Pixel Watch 5 can’t be used with an iPhone, and an Apple Watch can’t be used with an Android phone either. This is a hard line, not a matter of degree – there’s no partial compatibility or workaround available for either brand.
GPS and location tracking
Beyond raw specs, navigation accuracy is one of the clearest points of difference between the two watches. Google claims the Pixel Watch 5 has the best GPS of any smartwatch. The watch uses dual-band GPS powered by machine learning, and Google claims a 2x improvement in accuracy specifically in urban environments by pulling in data from Google Maps – useful for anyone who has tried to navigate a route through a city packed with skyscrapers.
In testing, the reviewer found the Pixel Watch 5 accurately tracked outdoor runs and walks overall, though there were a few wobbles through Canary Wharf; even so, the watch was generally accurate and most users shouldn’t be disappointed. The Apple Watch Series 12’s GPS hasn’t been reviewed yet, but the reviewer found last year’s Apple Watch Series 11 GPS “consistently locks in quickly” to accurately track a route, and expects similar performance from the newer Series 12.
Heart rate and health sensing
Health tracking accuracy is the other major battleground for this year’s watches. While Google claims the Pixel Watch 5 has the best GPS of a smartwatch, Apple claims its Apple Watch Series 12 offers the most accurate heart rate sensing in a wearable. Apple backs that claim with a study of more than 1,000 participants comparing the Apple Watch’s new heart rate sensing accuracy against leading wearables, saying the Apple Watch provided the highest accuracy across devices.
Behind that claim is Apple’s new Health Sensing System, which pairs new optical and electrical heart sensors with larger LEDs that measure heart rate every five seconds. The Apple Watch Series 12 also measures HRV up to 24 times more often than before, offering wider insight into stress and recovery.
Battery life and charging speed
Battery life remains one of the most commonly cited limitations of both smartwatch platforms, so any gains matter. Neither Apple nor Google is known for industry-leading battery life, and despite some improvements, that’s still true of their 2026 flagship wearables. The Apple Watch Series 12 promises 24 hours of life between charges, unchanged from the Series 11, while the Pixel Watch 5 promises 40 hours. In review testing, the reviewer found they could eke out even more than Google’s promise, seeing 45-50 hours between charges on the larger 45mm variant.
Both watches also support fast charging. A 15-minute top-up gives the Apple Watch Series 12 an additional 12 hours of battery, while the same 15 minutes gets the Pixel Watch 5 up to 40 hours.
Apple Intelligence vs Gemini Intelligence
Each company’s onboard assistant also plays a growing role in distinguishing the two watches beyond hardware alone. The Apple Watch Series 12 runs on Apple’s own S11 chip, which the company calls its most powerful wearable processor yet. It powers accurate health and fitness tracking as well as Apple’s new Audio Intelligence features, which use the watch’s built-in microphone for tools like Sound Recognition (detecting sirens, doorbells, and other alerts), Live Rewind (replaying the last 15 seconds of audio), and Siri Recap (which takes notes during conversations). Apple says users can control when Siri Recap is listening, and that the Apple Watch Series 12 doesn’t store recordings on-device.
The Pixel Watch 5, meanwhile, runs on Google’s Gemini Intelligence. The reviewer considers Gemini one of the most useful smartwatch assistants around, responding to queries quickly and accurately. Gemini Intelligence also powers the Google Health app, specifically the Google Health Coach feature included with the Premium subscription, which offers personalized insights and fitness advice for an additional $9.99/£7.99 a month. It isn’t a necessary add-on, but the reviewer would recommend it, calling it a feature that works brilliantly.

Early verdict
The deciding factor for most shoppers will still come down to whether they carry an iPhone or an Android phone, since compatibility rules out one watch or the other outright. But for anyone with flexibility between platforms, the differences are real: the Pixel Watch 5 offers what Google calls the best GPS of any smartwatch, runs Gemini Intelligence, and promises longer battery life at 40 hours versus 24 hours for the Apple Watch. The Apple Watch Series 12, meanwhile, promises to be more accurate than ever thanks to its new Health Sensing System, and comes equipped with new Apple Intelligence features built around its S11 chip. Both watches share the same £369 UK starting price, so for now, the choice largely comes down to ecosystem rather than cost.
