The Galaxy S27 Ultra display may avoid the compromises that held back its predecessor, according to a PhoneArena opinion piece. Samsung introduced a new display technology called Privacy Display with the Galaxy S26 Ultra. The panel can switch pixels on or off so that the screen looks darkened, or fully off, to anyone peeking from the sides, above, or below.
According to the piece, image quality paid the price. With Privacy Display active, the screen runs at a lower resolution because pixels are deliberately turned off. Even with the feature disabled, the writer says the S26 Ultra has worse viewing angles than competing phones, and also describes the display as straining eyes and making users nauseous. Some users have recently returned their S26 Ultra because of these display problems.
If Samsung delivers, the phone should offer a far more pleasant experience, with a sharper, more defined display even while Privacy Display is on. Better viewing angles would make it a flagship worth waiting for instead of buying the S26 Ultra, the writer argues.
Despite calling the S26 Ultra a fantastic flagship, the writer skipped it because of the display issues, a rounder design, and an archaic-looking camera island. The writer instead believes the new Galaxy Z Fold 8 is the Samsung phone most worth buying this year. The piece adds that Samsung has been releasing excellent phones and features lately, including the Z Fold 8 and Privacy Display, and will continue that trend into 2027.
A fix for the screen would put the S27 Ultra back among Ultra phones worth serious consideration. The writer also points to a larger battery, described as overdue, and a redesign the piece admits is divisive.
