Forgetting a PIN right after setting it is a common frustration, and a new teardown suggests Android could eventually offer a way around it without resorting to a factory reset: unlocking a forgotten phone using nothing but a Google account.
Tipster AssembleDebug dug through the code of Android 17 QPR2 Beta 5 and found a hidden setting called “Unlock with Google Account.” As shown in a screenshot shared by Android Authority, the option sits right alongside the PIN, password, and fingerprint options inside the “Device unlock” menu in Settings. Its description reads: “If you forget your PIN or password, unlock your device using your linked Google account.”
The feature is currently dormant, though – Google hasn’t switched it on for anyone testing the release.
It has. Back in the Android 4.4 era and earlier, users could reset a forgotten pattern using their Google account login details. Google removed that option in Android Lollipop, replacing it with Factory Reset Protection for security purposes instead. That system only checks a Google account after the entire phone has been wiped, a measure mainly meant to stop thieves from reselling stolen devices.
The new “Unlock with Google Account” feature is optional and appears with its own toggle, so anyone worried about a stranger getting hold of both their phone and their Google password can simply leave it switched off.
Ironically, Factory Reset Protection created a new headache of its own: legitimate owners who simply forgot their own passcode ended up facing the same hurdle as an actual thief. It’s worth noting there’s no confirmation this feature will actually ship – teardown finds like this one sometimes quietly disappear before reaching a public release.
