Google is developing an update for Google Messages live location sharing that adds live traffic overlays alongside satellite and terrain map views. The upcoming controls were observed in testing, though Google has not confirmed an official release date or rollout strategy for all users.

Google Messages location sharing is preparing an update that will introduce live traffic overlays and alternative map styles, according to reports. The new features remain in development, and Google has not shared an official launch date or rollout schedule. Live location sharing itself arrived for Google Messages users earlier this year, following an initial rollout in late March that gradually expanded over the following weeks. Competing messaging platforms, including Telegram, have offered similar real-time tracking tools for years. Now, Google appears ready to expand its own implementation with more detailed navigation views.

As reported by Android Authority, the upcoming changes let users overlay real-time traffic conditions directly onto the shared map. When you share your location with a contact during a conversation, that person can check the traffic status along your route toward an agreed meeting point. The update also adds satellite and terrain views. Currently, Google Messages defaults to the standard Google Maps layout, which remains the single choice available to users sharing their whereabouts.
In testing, Android Authority was able to surface the hidden interface in its build of the app. The controls place a dedicated button on the map screen. Tapping that button opens a settings panel displaying options for map types and map details. From there, selecting a specific layer applies the chosen view to the conversation interface immediately.
Google has not commented on when the refreshed map settings will reach regular users. Because the feature is still undergoing internal development, there is no public confirmation whether Google plans a phased global release or a staged rollout that opens access country by country. Until Google pushes the update to production channels, users sharing their coordinates in Google Messages will stay with the standard map preview.
