Some OnePlus 15 owners can now apply for the ColorOS 17 open beta and voluntarily move their phones from OxygenOS to ColorOS. OnePlus opened applications for the program, which for now is limited to users in India. The OnePlus 15 will be remembered as the swan song of OnePlus for its fans in the US and Europe, yet the phone keeps receiving software updates. The OnePlus 16 won’t launch outside China, but its predecessor is getting an entirely new operating system that some users can already try.
The announcement lands alongside Oppo’s official word that the international version of ColorOS 17, which is based on Android 17, will be unveiled on October 13. According to Oppo, the Chinese company, the software will bring design changes and what it calls “more natural system experience.”

Eventually, the ColorOS 17 update should reach all OnePlus 15 devices. For now, only users in India can enroll in the beta, and it is limited to devices running specific software versions. There is no information on when a stable release may arrive. Details about a US release are missing too, although an open beta in the United States seems unlikely for OnePlus.
The company cautions that the ColorOS 17 beta is an early build, so some features are either missing or not working as intended. Installing it could expose you to instability, lag, overheating, battery drain, and app compatibility issues.
When OnePlus announced its exit from markets such as the United States and Canada, it described the change to its software strategy as “an operational adjustment.” Once ColorOS 17 ships, owners of OnePlus devices that are due for software upgrades will be able to update to it voluntarily.
Anyone who would rather stay on OxygenOS can do so, since OnePlus promised “version maintenance support” for it. The company also said users will be able to roll back to OxygenOS after updating to ColorOS.
Some OnePlus 15 owners online weren’t thrilled about the interface change heading to their phones. Several Reddit users replied that OxygenOS and ColorOS are already very similar.
